Thirty-Six Views of Mt. Fuji: Kajikazawa in Kai Province
(Fugaku sanju-rokkei: Koshu Kajikazawa)
a fisherman holds his lines while standing on a promontory of a rocky coastline with turbulent waves breaking beneath, a young helper sits behind him examining the contents of a basket; signed zen Hokusai Iitsu hitsu, published by Eijudo (Nishimura-ya Yohachi), ca. 1831.
oban yoko-e 9 3/4 by 14 3/4 in., 24.9 by 37.5 cm
The triangular form of Mt. Fuji in the distance is mirrored in the grouping of the jutting rock, the fisherman, and his lines; a compositional structure typical of Hokusai in general and this series in particular.
