Shiko Munakata
Shiko Munakata (1903-1975)
Night Birds (the fence of...)
(Yacho Domo no saku)
sumizuri-e of three owls on a branch; signed at lower right in pencilled kanji, Shiko, and penciled English, Munakata, with artist's pine needle symbol and red seal Muna, numbered at lower left 22/100, ca. 1967 (blocks carved)
19.1 by 29.3 cm
The pine needle symbol that Munakata frequently adds to his signature was the same mark his grandfather, a blacksmith, placed on his swords, and that his father, working in the Meiji period when samurai were forbidden to carry swords, could only place on cutting tools.
