Jugyokusai Gyokumin
Edo, 19th century
inlaid wood kappa
length 1 5/8 in., 4.1 cm
The water-sprite with its back left webbed foot caught in the lips of a clam shell, its eyes and watery elixir at the top of its head of inlaid mother-of-pearl, its claws and details on the clam and himotoshi in inlaid ivory. Signed Gyokumin with a kao.
Gyokumin was a student of Komin. Both artists favored this subject in a variety combination of inlays. For comparison with another Gyokumin study of the same subject, see Lazarnick, Netsuke & Inro Artists, and How to Read Their Signatures, Vol. I, p. 426.
