Sosui Ouchi
Asakusa, 1911-1972
pair of wood Nio
height of each approximately 2 1/2 in., 6.2 cm
The pair stand in the traditional poses of the temple guardians: one with the mouth open, the other with the mouth closed. Both guardians display fearsome expressions and highly developed musculature. The extraordinary pair are extremely finely carved, their eyes are double-inlaid with ivory and dark horn. Both works are signed on the back hem of their robes, Sosui.
Sosui was a pupil of Soko and considered the finest carver among the So school.
