netsuke
ivory netsuke attributed to Harutada
Kyoto, 18th century
shishi and ball
height 1 3/4 in., 4.5 cm
an unusually large study of a shishi, seated with its paw resting on a tama ball and turning its head with massive mane of curls to look over its shoulder, the open mouth revealing a small tama within, with large curls of its coat falling to its shoulders and extending from the upright bushy tail, with fine hairwork and bearing a warm honey patina; the compact composition well-utilizes a triangular section of the material, unsigned
This netsuke bears close comparison (in particular the treatment of the swirling locks of hair, the haunches and the double-incised toes) with the shishi signed Harutada, which appears as catalogue no. 146 in Eskenazi's Japanese Netsuke from the Carré Collection, London, June 1993
