Rakumin wood netsuke and ojime set
19th century
Shoki netsuke with oni ojime
netsuke 1 1/4 by 1 1/2 in., 3.3 by 3.8 cm
ojime 3/4 in., 2 cm
the netsuke of Shoki peering down a wooden well, below, a small oni functions as an ojime as he clings to the cord; signed on the underside of the well, Rakumin, the ojime unsigned
The legend of The Demon Queller Shoki chasing (and being bested by) a myriad of oni is one of the most popular mythological subjects found in netsuke. This pairing of the Shoki pursuing the oni down the length of the sagemono cord cleverly integrates form and function.
