Masanao
Kyoto, 18th century
wood tiger |
|
height 3.8 cm.

The boldly carved animal turns to look back over its left haunch, its plump brows drawn into a fierce frown and its ears flattened in an expression of annoyance. The muzzle is characteristically elongated and its tongue flicks down the lower jaw, a signature trait of Masanao's tiger carvings. The joints of the lower back and shoulders jut up though the powerful musculature of the body and the thick tail sweeps around its back. The lightly incised hair work and whiskers are stained dark, and the eyes are inlaid in dark horn. Signed within an oval reserve Masanao.
