unsigned wood netsuke
18th century
Shoki and oni
height 2 7/8 in., 7.2 cm
|
the demon queller grimaces in satisfaction as he grasps a struggling oni by the neck, he has unsheathed his sword from the scabbard slung on his back and holds it at the ready, the dark stained wood bearing a rich patina
|
This composition of Shoki and oni is very similar to a design illustrated by Shumemaru in the artists' handbook Soken Kisho (see detail below) published in 1781.
