the demon queller grimaces in satisfaction as he grasps a struggling oni by the neck, he has unsheathed his sword from the scabbard slung on his back and holds it at the ready, the dark stained wood bearing a rich patina
This composition of Shoki and oni is very similar to a design illustrated by Shumemaru in the artists' handbook Soken Kisho (see detail below) published in 1781.
