Azuma (lit. 'the East') is a common poetic name for Edo, or the Eastern Capital. This print depicts a group of beauties enjoying the evening cool and fireworks in the area near the Ryogoku Bridge, seen in the distance. During the summer months the Sumida River was open to pleasure boats, where on most clear nights there were firework displays.
