Jiraiya with kiseru
the actors Iwai Kumesaburo III, Ichikawa Saruzo I and Ichikawa Danjuro VIII; each sheet signed Toyokuni ga within artist's Toshidama seal, with publisher seal of Iseya Chusuke, nanushi censor seals Kinugasa (Kinugasa Fusajiro) and Murata (Murata Heimon), and date seal ne-hachi (year of the rat [1852], 8th month)

This untitled triptych may depict a scene from the kabuki play, Jiraiya Goketsu Monogatari ('Heroic Tales of Jiraiya') which premiered at the Kawarazakiza in July 1852. Ichikawa Danjuro VII, seated at right holding a long kiseru (tobacco pipe), is in the role of Jiraiya.
