Utagawa Hiroshige, 1797-1858
Two Preparatory Drawings related to pages in ehon 'Ukiyo Album Three'
(Ukiyo Ryusai gafu sanpen)
sumi ink on paper, unsigned, not dated, ca. 1835-45
each approximately 7 1/2 by 5 3/8 in., 18.9 by 13.5 cm
These two prepartory drawings relate to pages found in Hiroshige's third illlustrated book from an undated trilogy of collected sketches, Ukiyo Album (Ukiyo gafu), published in Nagoya by Eirakuya Toshiro. The vertical composition is comprised of three locations which are identified as Shiraito Falls (Shiraito no taki), Tatsuta River (Tatsutagawa), and Yoshino River (Yoshinogawa) is found on page eighteen in the published book. The drawing with three separate horizontal landscapes is very similar to the compositions found on page fifty-two in the book, although the top scene in the drawing is missing a title, identified in the book as a Ferry on the Sumida River (Sumida watashi), and the published version includes a distant mountain. The middle landscape, Asuka Mountain (Asukayama), and Shibaura on the bottom are nearly identical to the ehon.
