Layered Sketch of Bugaku Performer
ink and color on multiple layers of paper, unsigned
approximately 10 5/8 by 5 3/4 in., 27 by 14.5 cm
This dynamic drawing of a bugaku performer offers a fascinating glimpse into the artistic process. With at least 4 layers of paper pasted one on top of the other, the artist worked his way up from a heavy-handed but accomplished sketch (visible from verso), to a lighter version on the top layer embellished with washes of color. It is unsigned and came from a collection of a large variety of preparatory works, most of it unattributable to any particular artist or school.
