Plovers and Waves
(Nami ni chidori)

signed Shoson with artist's seal Shoson and publisher's seal (Hotei C, ca. 1927-32) on the lower right margin, Hanmoto Watanabe hanga ten (Publisher Watanabe Print Shop), ca. 1930

dai oban tate-e 14 3/4 by 9 7/8 in., 37.4 by 25.2 cm

A comparison with the Toledo impression, which must have been produced by the time of the 1930 exhibition and yet lacks a publisher seal, reveals interesting differences. This impression benefits from more saturated barensujizuri (baren swirls) in the sand, and changes to the grey block to make the grasses in the dark area of the foreground more distinct.
