Tsuchiya Rakusan, Clematis and Gray Wagtail with Mantis

Tsuchiya Rakusan, (Rakuzan) 1896-1976

Koushisei's Print Selection [36 Series]: Clematis and Gray Wagtail with Mantis
(Koushisei Gasen: tessen ni kisekirei to kamakiri)

signed Rakusan Koshi sei with artist's seal Rakusan, ca. 1948-55

oban yoko-e 10 by 15 1/8 in., 25.4 by 38.4 cm

Rakusan began this series of thirty-six prints in 1935-41, and then completed it 1948-55. This design is the 33rd print in the series, and as such was likely produced with the later group. It was adapted from an original painting on silk created in 1934. Although the common Romanization of his name was Rakuzan, apparently the artist preferred to spell his name Rakusan.
