Kakunen Tsuruoka, 1892-1977
untitled (mesquite tree with mist on golden brush)
watercolor on paper, signed and dated at lower left, Kakunen Tsuruoka 44, with artist's seal Kaku at lower right, 1944
12 3/4 by 19 1/4 in., 32.5 by 48.9 cm
Before the war it appears that Kakunen never dated or signed his paintings in English, presumably preferring to present his work as that of a traditional Japanese painter. While many of his watercolors from Poston are likewise signed and/or sealed in Japanese, he appears to have transitioned to signing in English at towards the end of his confinement from 1943-1944.
