Kakunen Tsuruoka mesquite tree

Kakunen Tsuruoka, 1892-1977

untitled (mesquite tree)

watercolor on paper, signed and dated Kakunen Tsuruoka 44 at lower left, 1944

16 1/8 by 22 1/2 in., 41.1 by 57.3 cm

Nearly all Kakunen's Poston paintings incorporate at least one barren mesquite tree. When viewed as a series, the gnarled mesquite seem to represent lonely figures that stand-in for all the emotions of an unjust incarceration.
