In the 1877-78 series, A Collection of Desires, Yoshitoshi, explores the everyday hopes and passions of women, ranging from personal wants or dreams to sharing a pleasure with someone. Some of the designs are focused on self-serving desires and weaknesses such as vanity.

The text is written by Takabatake Ransen (1838-1885), under the pen name Tentendo Shujin. Ransen was a popular writer, who worked for Tokyo nichinichi shinbun among other publications.
