Mano Gyotei, (1874-1934)
Raijin Retrieving his Drum
hanging scroll, ink and color on silk; signed Gyotei with artist's seal Gyotei
painting 38 5/8 by 14 in., 98 by 35.5 cm
overall 73 by 19 1/8 in., 185.5 by 48.5 cm
In contrast to the painting of the screaming Raijin, with this painting Gyotei portrays a light-hearted image of the Thunder God, his ferocity diminished as he is forced to 'fish' for his lost drum.
