Kunisada (Toyokuni III)

Utagawa Kunisada (Toyokuni III)

Ichimura Takenojo V Memorial Portrait
(Ichimura Takenojo V shini-e)

unsigned, ca. 1851, 8th lunar month

oban tate-e 14 by 9 7/8 in., 35.7 by 25 cm

The actor Ichimura Takenojo V (1812-1851) is depicted holding a maple bough. Takenojo V was a dynamic and lively personality. It is said that he once brought 40 guests with him on a pilgrimage to Narita temple, during which time he and his company spent ten days feasting. For the lavish trip, he paid roughly 1,200 ryo, about a years salary for a prominent kabuki actor (let alone the average resident of Edo). In addition to being a talented actor, he was a promoter for the Ichimura Theater in Edo, a task to which one can imagine the profligate socialite was well suited.
