Hiroaki (Shotei)

Takahashi Hiroaki (Shotei)

1871-1945

Pine Grove at Miho
(Miho no Matsubara)

sealed Shotei, published by Watanabe Shozaburo, pre-1923

otanzaku yoko-e 5 3/4 by 15 in., 14.5 by 38.2 cm

This print appears to be a very scarce pre-earthquake variant of a design of which there is also another pre-earthquake version as well as a post-earthquake version. The uneven line of along the lower edge of the composition and at the lower left corner are hallmarks of an early pre-earthquake Watanabe printing technique which economized on paper trim by incorporating the kento (reigitration)marks just up to the edge of the composition without a border. This particular variant is not recorded in either of Hisao Shimizu's books on Shotei, nor (as of yet), on the comprehensive website, www.shotei.com, managed by the collector and scholar Marc Kahn.
