Kakunen Tsuruoka

untitled (bowing mesquite in barren landscape)

watercolor on paper, with artist's oval seal at lower right, Tsuruoka, ca. 1942-44

15 1/4 by 21 7/8 in., 38.6 by 55.7 cm

The Poston camp (officially called the Colorado River Relocation Center) was located in Sonoran desert in Arizona. The temperatures in the summer would rise above 100 degrees, and in the winter they could fall as low as below freezing. The fine silt soil would blow constantly, sometimes in stifling dust storms. This solitary mesquite, bowing into the misty landscape, seems to be drowning in the desert sands.

price: $ 3,200
