Yamamura Koka

Toyonari, 1885-1942

Buddha's Hand with Navel Oranges (with original title slip)
(Busshukan to neburu)

signed Toyonari with date seal Taisho hinoe tora (Taisho, year of the fire tiger [1926]), with artist's seal Toyonari on lower left margin, and with original title slip on verso, Busshukan to neburu, self-published via the Yamamura Koka Hanga Kankokai, from the original edition of 100 impressions, ca. 1926

dai oban yoko-e 10 7/8 by 15 5/8 in., 27.7 by 39.7 cm

While Toyonari's printed works were never produced in great abundance (and published in limited editions), his stylish bird and flower subjects are comparatively more scarce than his traditional portraits of actors and beauties. The attached print title slip on this impression is a revelation as there is no record of similar title slips on the extant published works by Toyonari.
