Kakunen Tsuruoka

Japanese Bush Warbler on a Blossoming Plum Branch
(Ume ni uguisu)

ink and color on light brown paper, signed Kakunen with two artist's seals, Kaku and Nen, n.d., ca. 1920s

7 1/8 by 20 1/2 in., 18 by 52.2 cm

The elusive uguisu (bush warbler) is pale green-brown passerine that is usually only seen in the early spring when the trees are still bare. Once the trees fill out with leaves the uigusu tend to remain hidden deep within the foliage. As such, uigusu are closely associated with plum trees which are usually the first trees to blossom in early spring- sometimes when there is still snow lingering on the ground.

Estate of Haruno Tsuruoka (daughter-in-law of Tokutaro 'Kakunen' Tsuruoka)

price: $ 1,100
