Downpour Over Mt. Fuji (10/40)
(Fuji-san no O-ame)

printed on natural cream washi with a rough mimi (selvage edge), with artist's red seal at upper left, Bin, numbered in pencil on bottom margin, 10/40, titled in Japanese, Fuji-san no O-ame, and signed, Paul Binnie, 2001

chuban yoko-e 7 1/4 by 8 3/4 in., 18.4 by 22.3 cm

Binnie used the blocks for this design in small batches for demonstration purposes until he completed the edition of only 40 impressions. There were approximately 5 or 6 different types of paper used in the edition, some thicker, some thinner, in shades ranging from bright white to almost buff. Each washi gives a different feel. The colors also would vary slightly as he would mix them immediately before beginning his demonstration. In the course of producing the prints, he emphasized how the printer could handle the application of color and utilize various printing techniques in order to achieve a variety of different effects. As such, the variation in the atmosphere is entirely due to printing rather than carving. The impressions are extremely variable, and the result is much more like a series of monotypes rather than a regular edition produced at once which is his process now.

In comparison with other extant (though scarce) impressions, the pigment used on this example was somewhat wetter and darker, more purplish in the center clouds with less definition in the hand-shading within them.
