1871-1945

Moon at Tokumochi
(Tokumochi no tsuki)

with the artist's go, San Ji Sai, at the lower left followed by the artist's seal Shotei, publisher's seal Watanabe at lower right, ca. 1936

chuban tate-e 10 1/4 by 7 1/8 in., 25.9 by 18.1 cm

This is a smaller version of a pre-earthquake design which was part of a Setsugekka (Snow, Moon, Flowers) group of three oban-sized prints. Apparently only this 'moon' print was re-issued after the 1923 earthquake in the smaller chuban format. Although the characters above the artist's seal, San Ji Sai (Three Natures of Snow, Moon and Flowers), suggest a series title, Shotei used this signature on a variety of other prints unrelated to the Setsugekka theme.
