untitled (cacti and sage brush)
watercolor on paper; unsigned, with oval Tsuruoka seal on verso, ca. 1942-44
16 3/8 by 22 in., 41.7 by 56 cm
The majority of Kakunen's Poston watercolors are focused on four recurring elements: mesquite trees, sage and grasses, distant mountains, and the changing light in the desert sky. This is the only Poston watercolor by Kakunen which features cacti. Considering how little the subject interested him, and the lack of signature or seal, one could imagine that perhaps he just did not feel an affinity with the barbed succulents.
