Kakunen Tsuruoka

1892-1977

untitled (golden hazy landscape with mesquite at left)

watercolor on paper, signed at lower right, Kakunen Tsuruoka, ca. 1942-44

8 by 10 1/4 in., 20.3 by 25.9 cm

Before the war it appears that Kakunen never dated or signed his paintings in English, presumably preferring to present his work as that of a traditional Japanese painter. While many of his watercolors from Poston are likewise signed and/or sealed in Japanese, during his confinement he transitioned to signing in English, presenting himself as an American landscape painter.
