Stern (1922-1977), the former Curator and Director of the Smithsonian Institution Freer Gallery of Art, and author of several books on Japanese Art including: Master Prints of Japan (1969), Rimpa: Masterworks of the Japanese Decorative School (1971), The Magnificent Three: Lacquer, Netsuke and Tsuba (1972), and Birds, Beasts, Blossoms and Bugs: the Nature of Japan (1976).
