Kakunen Tsuruoka

1892-1977

sailboat and blossoming trees

ink on washi paper; sealed Kaku with oval Tsuruoka family seal on verso, n.d., ca. 1942

9 1/2 by 14 1/2 in., 24.1 by 36.8 cm

This landscape was painted on the same type of washi paper Kakunen used for a few of his works from his time at Poston. As such, it seems likely that it was produced either before or shortly after his arrival at the internment camp, when he was still painting nostalgic views of Japan and signing in Japanese. Under those circumstances, he was probably making do with whatever materials he could find, but the porous nature of washi, lacking the sizing found in watercolor paper, made it problematic for Kakunen's style of painting which relied on manipulating washes and combining pigments in pools of ink. The discoloration of the paper along the tree line is likely a result of the excess water seeping away from the wet pigment.
