ink and wash on washi paper, signed, Kakunen, with artist seal Kakunen, n.d., ca. 1941

13 1/4 by 20 1/8 in., 33.6 by 51 cm

This landscape was painted on the same type of washi paper Kakunen used for a few of his works from his time at Poston. As such, it seems likely that it was produced either before or shortly after his arrival at the internment camp, when he was still painting nostalgic views of Japan and signing in Japanese. Under those circumstances, he was probably making do with whatever materials he could find, but the porous nature of washi, lacking the sizing found in watercolor paper, made it problematic for Kakunen's style of painting which relied on manipulating washes and combining pigments in pools of ink. With this work he seems to have largely overcome those issues and mastered his control of the ink and wash on the textured washi.
