Kakunen Tsuruoka

1892-1977

Carmel Highland at Twilight
(Tasogare no Kaameru Hairando)

signed in kanji at lower right, Kakunen, with artist's square seal, Kaku, artist's copyright seal on the right margin, Hanken shoyu Tsuruoka Tokutaro, the title printed along the left margin followed by the date, Sen-kyuhyaku-sanju hachi-nen (1938), signed and dated sidewise along the left edge in pencil, TSURUOKA KAKUNEN 1938 and numbered 80/100, with artist's oval family seal, Tsuruoka, 1938

oban tate-e 15 1/4 by 10 1/2 in., 38.8 by 26.7 cm

The subject of this print is the meditation hut belonging to the artist's most beloved patron, the heiress Mrs. Juliet Ector Orr Munsell (1865-1948). Were it not for the title (in Japanese) identifying the location in California, the composition could be easily mistaken for a classic shin-hanga depiction of a landscape in Japan.
