Cat Feathers: Dark Magic

signed at upper right in kanji, Bin-ni, with artist's red seal, BINNIE, signed in pencil on the bottom margin, Paul Binnie, from an edition of 100, 2021

aiban tate-e 13 1/8 by 9 3/4 in., 33.3 by 24.7 cm

This print is a new color variant of Cat Feathers, the print design inspired by a 2018 commissioned portrait of a lady with her cat.

The same blocks that were used to create the orange tabby against the bright red and blue backgrounds of the original design, were used to create this grey and black cat against the teal background of Dark Magic. However, there are some changes to the composition even beyond the colors. The cat's amber eyes have new bokashi to make them feel more life-like. The fur is more detailed, with the addition of a medium grey hue that was added to the stripes by carving into the original block for the lighter stripe to create an extra layer for printing.

While each version of Cat Feathers was released unexpectedly by the artist, there will be no more variants as the blocks have now been destroyed.

This print is a special edition offered exclusively by Scholten Japanese Art.
