Suzuki Harunobu, Brazen Visitor Beneath the Mosquito Net

Suzuki Harunobu, ca. 1724-1770

Brazen Visitor Beneath the Mosquito Net

from an untitled series; a couple entwined emerge at the edges of a mosquito net, beneath which another sleeping man stretches out apparently exhausted from his efforts and unaware of the visitor; discreetly signed on the edge of a fusuma panel, Harunobu ga followed by a red artist's seal, Harunobu, ca. 1768

chuban yoko-e 8 1/8 by 11 1/4 in., 20.7 by 28.5 cm

In comparison with the previous print depicting a similar set up with a couple making love beside a sleeping man, in this composition the visitor has the shaved pate of an older man.
